This week’s topic is on disability, chronic pain, illness and death. I’ll warn you; the subject matter is heavy so you’ll want to pace yourself. Here are this week’s guiding questions:
• How do the medical model and sociological model differ in defining disability?
• How do the experiences of disability differ by race?
• What gains has the Disability Rights Movement made for persons with disabilities? One of the major debates within the movement is whether or not persons with disabilities should be considered a minority group. Given the textbook information, what do you think? • What is chronic illness and is it similar and different from disability?
• Watch Living Old in its entirety. Consider these questions: What positive and negative impacts has advanced medical technology had on the chronically ill, disabled and/or elderly (consider cost & quality of life here)? What evidence do you see of children and other family members doing the primary caretaking for their parents? How does this differ by gender? Consider how these same issues apply to those who are not elderly but are of younger age and chronically ill or disabled. What are your thoughts on the video?
