Doc Reynolds’ ACME Guide to Review Writing
The purpose of this handout is to provide you with some basic guidelines for the writing of Scholarly Reviews — whether they be on books, biographies, autobiographies, journal articles or whatever. The goal of a review is not to summarize the contents of the work being examined. That is called an abstract. The goal of a review is for the writer (you) to critically examine a work and access its value and impact upon the field of scholarship and to society.
To be successful, a review should include the following material:
1) A complete citation for the text being reviewed. This should appear at the top of the
first page of the review.
For example: Paul Edwards, ed., Equiano’s Travels, Exeter, NH: Heinemann Books, 1967.
2) A brief summary of the contents of the text. What is it about? How is it organized? This should be very brief, a page at most.
3) What is the author’s argument? What is it that the author wants you to think or believe after you have read this work? Every book or article is written with a purpose, and a review must identify that purpose. Next, you need to identify how the author structures his or her argument. How is it organized and presented? On what sources or evidence is it based?
4) Do you find the argument convincing?? Does the author prove her/his points? How effectively does the author present his or her case? (Examples of how the author backs up points or reinforces key themes are often a good idea). Is the material presented in a clear and effective manner?
