Your Final Exam essay is a response to a single question that everyone must answer by taking a position that shows a clear grasp of contrasting viewpoints on a topic. The purpose of the essay is for you to pull
together your understanding of Philosophy as presented in this course to date. You will be expected to not only answer the question “as asked” but to also demonstrate familiarity with our assigned readings
during the course. Your answer must include familiarity with these influences and specific, documented references.
This examination is to be completed at home, and to be turned in at class time Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Submissions should be typed, double-spaced and should be of a length commensurate with the scope of
the question, but no fewer than 1000 words (THREE FULL pages of text, regardless of what your computer program says). Margins should be 1-inch all around, and the font you select should be no larger
than 12 pt. Pages must be stapled. DO NOT EXCEED FOUR PAGES! Make sure you write your name and the question at the top of the submission.
There is no “right” or “wrong” answer to the question. But, there are certain standards of thinking that I expect you to maintain. Avoid platitudes and repetitive statements. Make certain that all references to the
book we’ve read are accurate. Strive to THINK about what they are saying to us, what their words mean in REAL TERMS, namely terms that speak to how we go about living our lives in a meaningful,
character-rich manner. Use your imagination to connect those dots. Use your reason to question and tie down what you imagine. Use your judgment and experience to point out what is sound.
READ THE ENTIRE QUESTION BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ANSWER IT.
PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN ‘F’ ON THE COURSE.
