Why Animate?

At this point, the class has watched films The Triplets of Bellville, that stretch and distort reality in order make points about life in the real, non-animated world. Frequently, they use distortions to create a sense

of unreality that allows ideas and images that would be disturbing in a live-action format to appear acceptably alien.

Using concepts from readings that relate to humor, closure, and the uncanny (you don’t need to use them all – just the ones that will help you develop your argument), pick a scene from one of these films that

does all of these:
a. Involves an event that would be anxiety-producing or difficult to watch if it were performed live-action
b. That makes a point that’s larger than the film – that suggests something about life in the real world
c. Uses the distorting power of animation to obscure, distract attention from, or cover over that point.
Then, analyze the scene, interpret its meaning, and argue how animation allows it to make its points. What is the bigger, real life picture involved here? How is that point made? How does animation make its

disturbing nature palatable?
