What’s behind the wings Red Bull gave us?
A brief about energy drink misuse and misconceptions of its caffeine content.
Their growing popularity represents a generational shift in what people drink, and reflects a successful campaign to convince consumers, that the drinks provide a mental and physical edge. As university students we have become well acquainted with energy drink. They have been the common trademark associated with study session, the party sense and sports games. When it comes to boosting energy and performance we count on Red Bull to make it happen. Why the bad rep, after discussing issues with a company representative it’s clear that misuse has resulted to the broken wings and crash we often experience after one too many Red Bulls. Rumours of its ingredients have been nothing short of horrific, speculation of bull and insect bile juices have been common. Red bull has been commercialized world-wide claiming to increase performance, concentration and reaction speed. But have we taken the time to understand what’s behind the Jolt in our energy drinks. Certain ingredients have not yet been studied for long-term efffects. Some of which are unregulated. The FDA limits caffine content in soft drinks because they fall under the catagory of food, but energy drinks are claasified as dietary supplements which allows them to surpass certain restrictions. It is suprising how little caffeine each drink actually has. Ranging from 80 mg to 215 mg per can, a 12-ounce Roast Starbucks Coffee has more at 260 mg. While drinking a cup of coffee is a slow process of caffeine ingestion, drinking energy drinks delivers the caffeine all at once, which is why we feel its effect immidetly. It works by blocking the effects of adenosine, a brain chemical involved in sleep. Causing neurons in the brain to spark. Tricking the body to think its an emergency, the pituitary gland initiates the body’s "fight or flight" response by releasing adrenaline. This hormone makes the heart beat faster and the eyes dilate. It also causes the liver to release extra sugar into the bloodstream releasing energy. Caffine is also a diuretic, promoting the kidneys to eliminate excess fluid into the urine. Physical activity can be particularly dangerous. The combination of duirtic and sweating leads to dyhydration. Perhaps its Red Bulls international marketing campaigns showcasing extreme sports that makes young adults think the combination of sports and energy drinks is a good idea.
Many people mix energy drinks with alcholic beverages. Since alcohol is a depressant, it has a tranquilizing effect on the body that can make you unaware of how much you’re drinking. One study found that men who combined energy drinks with alcohol felt alert and sober, even though they were actually drunk. And since both alcohol and energy drinks dehydrate you, when combined they can cause your body’s fluids to drop to dangerous levels.
