The purpose of this assessment is to apply management theories to a particular business
scenario. The aim is to come up with specific, implementable suggestions based on your analysis.
As was noted in the Assessment 2 outline, the company upon which the case study is based is a
fictitional one, designed for the purpose of the assessment in this unit.

Case study: Better Power
Better Power is a new company that has recently entered the power distribution business. Its main strategic direction is to provide ‘greener’ energy to Australian households by offering alternative green energy to households via solar farms, wind mills etc.
Recently, a plant operated by Better Power to produce solar panels has reported a 30% decrease of output, resulting in lower sales and backorders stretching up to two months. Upon investigation, supervisors at the plant have attributed lost productivity to:
• price rises in the raw materials required to make solar panels, due to a reduction in the value of the
Australian Dollar
• an increase in wastage of panel production by 15%, resulting in disposal and loss time
• new machinery introduced to speed up production not being properly operated.
News of the decreased output has led to a drop in employee morale and concerns about job security.
You are required to either:
• analyse how the company could address this situation and improve its efficiency by applying Taylor’s
theory to their internal operations, OR
• analyse how you would address employee concerns by applying Maslow’s theory.
Your task is to address the scenario above, choosing either:
• the classical viewpoint – focusing specifically on the ideas of FW Taylor
• the behavioural viewpoint – focusing specifically on the ideas of Abraham Maslow.
Based on your chosen viewpoint and analysis, write an essay recommending to Better Power
what approach it should take (or should have taken) and why. The essay should draw heavily from
the insights you gain from applying the academic framework focus chosen in the previous point.
