Task: The Brief
You are required to complete a case study of a particular firm within a sector of the experience
economy ? arts, sport, events or tourism. The firm may be a private sector business, or a government
organisation that is involved in directly providing or selling experiences to the public on at least a
semi-commercial basis. The purpose of this case study is to analyse and describe the selected firm
by applying the concepts and principles discussed throughout this subject. The case study involves
completing the following tasks in relation to the firm and its economic operating environment:
1. Describe the firm in terms of who they are and what they do. This description should answer such
questions as:
a. Whether they are private or public sector; and
b. The nature of the experience (service/product) they offer to their customers.
2. Analyse the experience offered by this firm using the Pine and Gilmore (2011) ?realms of
experience? framework. (Note: where the firm is diversified and offers a broad range of experiences,
students may focus on a single type of experience, or closely related set of experiences, offered by
the firm.)
3. Analyse and explain the demand conditions relating to this experience. This analysis should
include a discussion of such features as:
a. Key factors which cause changes in the level of demand over time; and
b. Elasticity of demand ? likely degrees of price, income and cross elasticity, based on characteristics
of experience/product and observable responses of demand to changes in influencing factors.
4. Analyse and explain the key features of supply and the competitive environment in which this firm
operates. This analysis should include a discussion of such features as:
a. Goals of the firm and how these impact on their economic behaviour;
b. Elasticity of supply;
c. Market structure, and degree and nature of competition within that market;
d. Principal way(s) in which this firm competes, and the rationale for this behaviour; and
e. Extent and nature of collaboration this firm engages in with other firms, and the rationale for this.
5. Describe the extent to which government entities external to the firm regulate or control the firm?s
activities, and/or support or subsidise those activities. Referring to the general concepts of market
failure and market imperfections, what is the economic rationale for such government intervention?
6. Provide an outlook and recommendations. Based on your understanding of the economic
conditions in which this firm operates, and the various demand and supply trends impacting on it,
what are the firm’s main economic challenges and opportunities over the next five years?
All work on this case study is to be completed on a strictly individual basis.

Case Study Selection
Students must select the firms for their case studies by no later than Week 4. They must notify the
lecturer of their selections via email on or before that date. This is to ensure that the firms chosen are
suitable for the case study exercise. The lecturer will advise students where there are concerns
about the suitability of the chosen firm. Students are free to choose a firm from any sector of the
experience economy ? arts, events, sport or tourism. The main limitations will be on the location of
the firm and the experiences it provides. In most cases, students will need to directly observe the
experience(s) and talk to the operators of the firm, hence choosing firms based in or around Sydney experience(s) and talk to the operators of the firm, hence choosing firms based in or around Sydney
would be an advantage. However, students may also analyse a firm from their home country where
they are very familiar with that firm and are capable of getting current information about it.
