Situation

You are the Director of the Physics department at KFUPM. Yesterday you received a letter of complaint (see below) from a student. After reading his complaint, you emailed his teacher, requesting more

information on the matter. The teacher responded this morning with his explanation of the situation (see Email).

Task

Consider all of the information and write a letter of adjustment to the student, rejecting his request. Send a carbon copy of the letter to the teacher, and enclose a copy of the original complaint. Your postal

address is box 1049, KFUPM, Ash Sharqiyah, Saudi Arabia, 31261. The student lives on the KFUPM campus. His post office box is 5347, postal code 31261.

Letter (body only): a complaint from a student, Mr. Yellah Al-Habibi:

I am a student in PY102 and I’m writing to discuss the grading policy of the physics department. Recently I got a B for the midterm exam and I was truly shocked by this grade. I am a first-honors student, and

this is the first time I have got a B for anything at this university. I think that the midterm exam was too difficult, or that maybe there was a mistake with my score.
I tried to discuss this issue with my teacher, but he was not merciful to my situation. He told me that the test was not a difficult test, but I can see from the class results that nearly all students got C’s and D’s. I

don’t know why we are being punished so badly with these scores. We all work very hard in this course, and the other departments don’t give difficult tests such as this. I am worried that my GPA will suffer

because of this. I will be in danger of losing my first-honor status unless we can come to some agreement about my midterm grade.
I am writing to ask that you please address this matter immediately by allowing me to sit the test again. In addition, I would like an explanation of the grading policy of the department. I look forward to hearing

your fair solution to this problem, and if not, then I will be happy to discuss the matter with the Rector.

Email (body only): a reply from the teacher, Mr. Abdullah Al-Mufti:

Thank you for your email. I remember talking to this student a couple of weeks ago. He told me that he was very tired during the midterm, and that he had many other majors from other subjects in the same

week as our major. I explained to him that I didn’t have control over the timing of the midterm.
Also he mentioned that he thought that the test was too difficult, but this is not true because some other students were able to achieve an A and A+ in the test, so it can’t have been too difficult. I also explained

that the tests were written by a team of senior teachers, and that they were rigorously checked and approved by you.
He requested to be able to sit the test again, but I explained that the policy of the department does not allow common exams to be repeated unless there is a valid medical reason supported by the appropriate

documentation.
It is my opinion that this student has an exaggerated view of his own abilities, and that his midterm grade is an accurate assessment of his real level. I have politely refused his request to re-sit the exam, but he

seems unable to accept my decision and is continuing to push me for further action. He says that he knows a prince, and that he will cause problems for me if I don’t help him. I’m not going to change my mind,

so I have directed him to you for any further discussion.
