Question
As numerous cultures and ethnicities arrived in America, a great many traditions followed. These traditions either struggled to survive or evolved as social forces acted upon them. “Fusion”, as Gerald Jonas

discusses, is in opposition to the forces seeking to conserve a tradition. Similarly, in Lesson 1, the term “confiscation” is used in regards to the integration of African dance traditions into American culture. With a

minimum 900 word essay , please a) create a thesis statement in which you define and describe what is meant by “confiscation” and “fusion” in terms of dance and society; b) describe a dance practice from the

course materials that exemplifies “confiscation” of dance forms to “create” a new, American dance form; c) describe a second dance practice from the course materials that exemplifies “fusion” of dance forms

to “create” a new, American dance form; d) compare the two dances and discuss how these dances historically represented, misrepresented, and/or still represent the American experience.
In paragraph b) and c), develop your arguments by: naming specific artists and dances; comparing the originating cultural dance form(s) to the “new” form; describing how a culture’s tradition is present in the

technique, form, structure; explaining the intentions of the artists in connecting to or reinventing cultural traditions
