ASSESSMENT STRATEGY
Students will be assessed by means of a single written assessment.
Instructions:
a. Select a firm or industry in the leisure, tourism or hospitality sector – examples include a travel agency, a holiday firm, the UK football industry, a leisure centre, a hotel or a restaurant.
b. Use the selected firm or industry as the focal point for your written assessment.
c. Provide a background commentary (300 words) on the economics of your firm. The background should cover the lectures on demand, supply, price, production, costs, elasticity and profits.
d. Provide an analysis (500 words) of three economic problems facing the firm/industry in the short-run, medium-run or long-run. Describe each problem and explain why the problem is economic.
e. Provide a business strategy (500 words) to help your firm/industry overcome the problems. Describe each solution using economic analysis.
f. Select a firm or industry that allows you to engage in suitable research.
g. The assessment must be produced in a professional manner. It should have an introduction and a conclusion. See chapter 14 of Taking the Fear Out of Economics for a guide to writing an assessment.
h. The word count is 1500, with a 10% range around the 1500 words. Assignments below 1350 and above 1650 words will be penalised.
