explain a particular element of the reading: something that the author wrote or talked about. You should

explain what they have to say in sufficient detail that I can tell that you did the reading, and that you

understand what they’re saying. You must cite to the text when
paraphrasing or explaining what the author had to say. Then you should explain what you think about what they

wrote (i.e., whether you agree or disagree with what they have written, and why, or what you think they’ve

missed, or whatever). You should attempt to justify your claims (don’t just tell me what you think). So there

should be both explanation of the authors views, and also an explanation of what you think about their

arguments and claims. Do not submit a paper which does only one or the other
This is a 2-3 page paper. In a short paper of this length, there is only so much that you can accomplish.

However, there is a certain amount that can be accomplished in a 2-3 page paper. You should think hard about

the material you read, figure out what you think of it, and articulate that.
In your short response paper you should not include a biographical introduction of the philosophers. Assume

that your reader knows who the philosophers are already, and doesn’t need you to re-explain it. Just jump

right to the philosophical content.
Note: You cannot simply pick some reading in our textbook and write about that. You must write about the

assigned readings (see the course outline on our syllabus). Papers submitted that cover materials not assigned

will receive no credit.
Above all: Do not write a paper telling me what you think about the topic which doesn’t really seriously

engaged with the thought of the authors of our assigned readings. This paper has to be written in MLA style
