Write a 3,200-word paper that explores the following topics in your workplace (Acute Care Dialysis in the

Ronald Reagan UCLA Hospital—consider acute, ICU AND chronic kidney PEDIATRIC dialysis patients, ages 0-18

years old of varying nationalities and demographics) that you select for this discussion:

1. Define culturally competent care appropriate for your own workplace, based on your perusal of the

assigned readings.

2. Identify the populations served and any issues of population vulnerability for culturally competent

care.

3. Describe and identify standards of culturally competent care that appear to be met and any that are

not met. WHY OR WHY NOT?

4. State how delivery of nursing care could be affected where standards are being met and where they are

not being met.

5. Provide at least 3 solutions that could be implemented where standards of care are not being met.

What to Read This Week:
Read Eula Biss’s essays “Is This Kansas” and “Notes From No Man’s Land”
In “Is This Kansas,” pay special attention to how Biss describes colleges as “feudal systems” (135). Also,

make note of her students’ comparison of looting in New Orleans before and after the looting in their own

town.
In “Notes From No Man’s Land,” pay special attention to how she treats the idea of fear. How does fear

function as a border or, at the very least, create and/or solidify social and national borders?

above assigned reading. If you have any questions about the reading, don’t hesitate to ask additional, meaning

definitely be one of the sources you will be using. I would also HIGHLY encourage you to think about what

other texts we have explored so far in this class – Mike Rose’s Lives on the Boundary and supplemental essays-

and IF and HOW these texts and text themes overlap with Eula Biss’s essays. First, you need to understand how
