I decided to speak about my own struggles with anxiety. Genetics, societal/cultural expectations, stressful life events, and sense of lack of control are what contributed to my anxiety. In my life I struggled with eating disorders and high anxiety. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety. I was always concerned with what people were thinking of me and being convinced that they were talking badly about me. I feared talking in public places and never wanted to eat around anyone for fear of what they were saying about me. If I heard laughing around me I automatically assumed they were laughing at something that I did. My parents sheltered me and a little bit enabled my anxiety because if I was scared to do something, as simple as ordering food at a restaurant, they would do it for me. I did not like not having control and knowing what people were whispering about so I stopped going out and did not want people to see me. I always thought that I had to act a certain way because my brother is so outgoing and knows how to talk to people well and in stressful situations and I was always too scared and shy and that only made me feel worse. I eventually went to get help because it was interfering with my day to day life because I never wanted to leave the house or go out anywhere. I was put on medication and it has done wonders for me. I am starting to learn how to deal with my anxiety. I wanted to talk about my own struggles with anxiety because I think I can provide an insider perspective for anyone curious about what it is like to deal with anxiety.
