This course examines the history and romance in Korean literature and films and correlations between representation of love and major historical, political, and cultural events or shifts throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. Hence you may conduct a purely formal or content-based analysis (or both); or your paper may in some way address the relationship of literature or film(s) to its socio-political and cultural context;
or it may be a combination of the two. You are free to explore topics of your choice, but all topics and topic changes must be approved by the instructor.
Type of paper
This paper should be an analytical research paper, centered on an arguable thesis. You may argue for a specific position on an issue; or you may review and critique issues to contextualize your own findings. In either case, the paper should apply secondary readings in its analysis of one or more of the novels we’ve read over the term.
Format
4-5 double-spaced pages, not including the bibliography/works cited, title page, etc. Sources should be cited in the text and in the bibliography/works cited using either Chicago or MLA citation styles. (Other styles of citation, for instance APA, if used consistently throughout the paper, may also be acceptable.)
Sources
You are expected to use relevant assigned readings as well as outside sources. You are required to use a minimum of 5 sources, of which no more than 3 can be from the assigned readings. You may use scholarly, peer-reviewed online journals, but web pages and encyclopedias are not permitted. Magazine and newspaper articles must be approved in advance. For a comparative paper, you may also utilize a literary work or works not read in the course, with the consent of the instructor.
