Some scholars have argued that the 20th century has been the most violent century ever witnessed by humanity. Others have suggested that the twentieth century has brought greater global cooperation and expansion of democracy. Your task is to write an essay in which you address the following question: Do you see the twentieth century as more noteworthy for its conflicts or its advances in human rights? In developing your answer, you need to identify and discuss at least fivesignificant events in global history from the late nineteenth century through the early 21st century. Your essay must:
• Include at least two events before the outbreak of World War II;
• Include at least two events after the outbreak of World War II;
• Include at least one additional moment from throughout the twentieth century;
• Provide a clear description of each event, including when it happened, who was involved, what it entailed, and why it was important for understanding the twentieth century as a time of violent conflict or the expansion of human rights; and
• Conclude with a summation that makes a statement as to what can be learned for the future by studying the history of the world in the twentieth century.
You are free to define "significant" any way that you wish, but you should at some point explain what criteria you are using (Did the moment affect many people? Did it alter the way people lived their lives? Did it improve society? Did it bring about great catastrophe? Did it limit people’s liberty? Did it expand people’s access to opportunity?).
