The goal of this 8-10 page research paper is to apply a sociological lens to understanding economic relationships in a country of your choice, other than the United States. You MUST substantially incorporate class readings, theories, concepts, lectures, and discussions. The specific direction of your paper can be related to any of the topics discussed in class, including but not limited to consumption, globalization, McDonaldization, economic inequality, the relationship between a country’s culture and economy, economic development, or any combination of class-related topics.
For this paper you must:
1) Submit a proposal: Choose a country other than the U.S. However, keep in mind that no more than 2 students can study the same country. Therefore, I’ll give priority to students who turn in their proposal first. In other words, the sooner you decide on a country and turn in your proposal, the greater your chance in getting your first choice. You should turn a list of 4 countries ranked in order of preference, with 1 being your first choice. In addition, the sooner you turn in the proposal, the better your change of getting your preference of presentation date.
What the proposal should contain: 1) Choice of 4 countries ranked in order of preference, and 2) Choice of 3 presentation dates ranked in order of preference
Other considerations: 1) You should do some pre-research on countries and give preference to countries that have greater amounts of research and data, and 2) remember that you will be giving an in-class presentation on this country, so the availability of visuals would be helpful.
2) Once you have been “assigned” one of the countries that you submitted, research this country in relation to the topics discussed in class. Choose the topical direction of your paper (see above). Find, explore, and evaluate existing research (e.g., news articles; books; scholarly articles) and data sources on your country. Relate these existing research and data sources to topics/readings discussed in class.
3) Organizationally, your paper should have the following format:
➢ Introduction (about 1-1.5 pages): Introduce country, give a quick overview of country, and provide the direction of the rest of your paper (e.g., any research questions you would like to answer, a preview of the topic(s) you will cover).
➢ Literature Review and theoretical perspective (about 3 pages): Discuss existing research from books, articles, etc., as well as sociological theories that might apply. This section should be organized topically/thematically instead of a laundry list of research. You could also organize this section by research question(s) you posed in the introduction.
➢ Data and findings (about 2-3 pages): Discuss the data you have found on your country and how the data inform your research questions/topics posed in the introduction and the themes discussed in your literature review.
➢ Discussion and conclusion (about 1-2 pages): Summarize your main findings; tie your finding back to your research questions and/or theory; talk about limitations related to the research/data on your country; and future directions/research questions for understanding the economic sociology of your country.
➢ Citations and bibliography of any article, book, or data source cited in your paper.
4) Upload your paper to SafeAssign (on Blackboard) by date/time due. Your paper will be considered late if turned in after this date/time. Keep/save an electronic and/or paper copy of your paper.
Other paper considerations:
➢ Write in essay format with an introduction paragraph, a body of the paper comprised of multiple paragraphs, and conclusion paragraph.
➢ Spell check and proofread papers. Watch your grammar. Use 11 size Times New Roman size, double line spacing, and 1” margins. Please proofread your paper, because I count spelling and grammatical errors in my grading.
➢ Grading Criteria:
o Content: How much effort did you put into the paper? Did you think deeply, critically, and seriously about the issues in the paper? Did you substantially incorporate class readings, lecture, discussion, etc… where appropriate?
o Organization: Did you follow the guidelines/instructions? How is your formatting (e.g., font, spacing, paragraph format)?
Clarity: Are your ideas expressed clearly and concisely? How is your grammar and spelling
