1. Motor Functions of the Left Hemisphere

Observations of clinical patients and experiments with normal subjects converge in
showing that the left hemisphere has an important role in controlling complex speech and manual functions in normal right-handed people. In particular, results from clinical patients suggest that the left hemisphere plays an important role in motor control of the right hand and the right hemisphere plays an important role in motor control of the left hand.

2. Performance Asymmetries in “Dual-Task” Procedures

One method of studying hemispheric asymmetries in normal subjects is to observe their performance when two tasks are carried out simultaneously. These are known as “dual-task” experiments. The dual-task procedure has been used to study interactions between verbal and manual activities thought to be lateralised in the left hemisphere.
In the experiment to be conducted in the tutorial class, subjects will be instructed to
balance a wooden dowel rod on the index finger of the right and left hand while engaged in a verbal task, or while remaining silent. This experiment is based loosely on Kinsbourne and Cook’s (1971) and Johnson and Kozma’s (1977) studies. These investigators reported that the duration that the right finger was able to perform the manual task was shortened by concurrently performing the verbal task.
