Social Work Core Subject: Human service intervention

Welcome to Human Service Intervention.
This course is designed to provide you with some theory frameworks for social work and human service work practice. Through lectures and tutorial activities you will learn the basic concepts from relevant

theory and in tutorials you will also have the opportunity to reflect on these and then apply this knowledge.

This course has a practical focus on the development of practice frameworks within which to plan and deliver service to individual clients and more broadly client systems in social work and human service

work contexts. The emphasis will be on ensuring that intervention is planned and a clear rationale can be argued for the decisions and professional judgements made throughout the intervention process. A

generalist approach to practice is taken in the course and the fundamental and pervasive elements of effective and efficient social work and human service work practice in a range of contexts are covered. The

stages of a systematic intervention process are presented and practice imperatives are considered at each stage. Students are encouraged to adopt a reflective orientation to practice and develop resourceful

approaches based on sound knowledge of the fundamental theories underpinning practice and the application of core social work and human service work principles.

The course is constructed around three elements of practitioner accountability:

1 the adoptionof a practice stance premised on the application of theoretical knowledge and social work and human service practice principles.
2 the use of sound analytical skills in the collection and interpretation of information.
3 the use of guidelines and frameworks to organise intervention.

This course will be challenging and does require your attendance, attention and commitment. We strongly encourage you to speak with us if you are experiencing any problems with your study and we look

forward to working with you this study period and hope you find the course challenging and rewarding.
