In this essay, you are asked to evaluate something based on certain criteria or standards. Your book says that “you will base your evaluation on a combination of criteria—and you will inevitably weigh some

criteria more heavily than others” (Roen et al. 281). The criteria you use will depend on what, exactly, you evaluate. Your book offers three types of evaluative essays or scenarios for writing (pages 285 –

288), and you may read those to get ideas. However, for this assignment, you will either follow scenario 3 (evaluate an event) or you will pick an item to evaluate (product, service, etc.) that is tangible and can

be described with sensory details. You will compare this item with another or several others, as appropriate, during and/or after the setting of your criteria of evaluation. See page 306 of MH Guide for

directions in “Constructing and Supporting Evaluative Criteria” (Roen et al.). You will then explain how the item you have chosen to evaluate ranks against your chosen criteria. All evaluations should contain
• a testimony
• statistical information
• detailed description
• appropriate citations
• a clearly stated judgment
• Works Cited entries (a minimum of two)

I suggest that you follow the Deductive Approach pattern of organization found on page 310 of your book (compare and contrast each aspect of what you are evaluating in relation to the criteria AFTER

stating your judgment.) However, you are free to devise this paper in any way you see fit, as long as you choose valid criteria, organize your writing logically, and present your evaluation in a meaningful way

with a clear purpose.

As always, you need a topic of interest, but after you find your topic, you first need to decide upon your criteria of judgment. To determine your criteria of judgment, you may want to start by Googling the

question, “What are the most desirable or important features of X?” You may also want to ask an expert, someone in the field, possibly via online chat, about what most people look for in a particular product,

service, etc. There may be published guides about your selected topic, and you may also have your own opinions on a valued criterion for a specific item. The first half of your paper, roughly a page and one-

half or so, should have an explanation of these criteria and why they matter to your topic. Then, move into a comparative analysis of your subject against the criteria and against/along with subjects of the same

type; see page 312 in MH Guide for advice on what to include in this paper and how to do so and page 289 for good tips on writing effective evaluations.

Audience:
Your audience for this paper is mainly me, at this point. However, you should envision that it could be anyone interested in your subject matter (as I will certainly be); imagine that your work will appear in an

online forum or on a site that offers evaluative write-ups.

Formatting & Evaluation:
This essay should be about 900 – 1000 words. Your essay may include a visual; pages 311- 313 in MH Guide give advice on putting together graphs and charts for your information. You should type your

essay in 12-point font and double space it (about 3 and one-half pages without Works Cited; however, you do not need to print an extra page for Works Cited if your entries fit on last page of your essay).

Use MLA left-justified heading and put your last name and page numbers on all pages (top right in header if possible). Give paper an enthralling title.
