** Case study of Michael Jacksons younger life from his autobiography ‘Moonwalk’, comparing to Eriksons "identity crisis" as Theory 1, and using attachment theories as Theory 2. **

In the introduction, just give a preview of your essay. Say what the essay is going present, i.e. inform the reader briefly what the case is going to be, which theories are going to be evaluated, and, if you wish, a

preview of which theory is going to be shown to be superior in the evaluation.

2. Outline of the case

In this section, give an outline of the life or the section of the life that is going to be analyzed. You must clearly state the published reference from which this case study comes. Make sure you include all the

details that are going to be relevant in the later analysis. Don’t make this section too long, but include all necessary details. Depending on your case, some people may have longer section 2s than others. Don’t

give the case as an enormous quote from your source – you must put it into your own words.

3. Analysis of the Case: Theory 1

In the title to this section, make sure you specify what theory 1 is (e.g. “Attachment theory”, or “Erikson’s theory”, etc.). Explain how the theory accounts for the person’s development. Use examples from the

person’s life as ‘data’ and explain how the theory would explain such data. You can briefly mention any problems the theory has here, but save any explicit evaluation until section 5.

4. Analysis of the Case: Theory 2

As above, but using a different theory to explain the same case. Since you have already explained theory 1, you can do some ‘comparing and contrasting’ of how the two theories deal with the case.

5. Final evaluation and formulation

This is the most important section. Most of the marks will be awarded for how well you can evaluate your two theories in relation to the case example. Remember, in this section, you are the JUDGE AND

JURY. You must weigh up the evidence for the two theories and decide which theory best explains the case you are analyzing.

Sections 3 and 4 are ideographic, i.e. you are trying to explain a single case. In this final section, you are also trying to explain an individual case, but in addition you should also consider some nomothetic data,

i.e. you need to look at evidence from research studies looking at several individuals as a way of criticizing or supporting the two theories. For example, let’s say your case study was an individual with a

personality disorder and your two theories were (a) attachment theory and (b) a genetic account. In this section you would look at the evidence for and against attachment theory in general, and for and against

genetic accounts in general, particularly with regard to personality disorders (because personality disorders happen to be the subject of your particular case). Thus, this section will probably have more citations

in it than the other sections, and you will be able to demonstrate your in depth reading relating to your two theories.

You should end with a final brief formulation of the case (though this does not need a separate subheading). This is where you briefly re-cap the life story, explaining it using the best theory (according to your

evaluation). You may (if appropriate and warranted by your evaluation) present a slight amalgamation of the two theories in your formulation if you want to argue that they complement each other in explaining

the life. However, this is by no means necessary and should only be done in a considered way – no “sitting on the fence” please!
