(1) It is inspiring to hear that fellow nursing professionals such as yourself are having an impact at the state legislative level. A strong voice is what is needed to steer health care towards the future, and as the largest single body of health care professionals, nurses stand to make a significant impact. I admire your hard work and diligence in the face of adversity.
(2) I think it’s great that nurses are being heard in the patient ratios as well as that patient’s have access to this information. This is a great way to improve safety measures for both the patient and the nurse, especially on critical floors.
(3) The restriction of mandatory overtime among the nursing workforce is extremely important. As of right now, only 14 States have restrictions. Washington State is one of them (American Nurses Association, 2014). In order to ensure patient safety and quality, mandatory overtime restrictions should be in all States. It is encouraging and hopeful to know that RN�s are in office to push for this to be enforced. Nurses in politics can witness, from firsthand experience, to the danger of mandatory overtime, and how this may be a contributing factor to nurses leaving the workforce.
(4) One of the many benefit of having nurses in the legislator is that they are caregivers, they understand the need of nurses and are in the better positions to make laws that will benefit the nurses as well as the citizens. Is so dumb when people who have no clue what healthcare is all about make rules concerning healthcare. Because she is a nurses understand the importance of expanding the roles of the nurses. And I love the fact that they still practice when the legislator is not in session.
(5) A nurse legislators and nurses both need to be an effective advocate and develop communication skills in order to persuade others to listen so positive changes can be made.
