Perennial Problems of Diversity
You are required to develop a research based proposal to inform the development of an innovative intervention to respond to the needs of 1 of the following Diversity groups
The group chosen will be -"Gender"
The aim of the proposal document is to develop a clear and concise argument for responding to perennial problems experienced by your chosen ‘dimension of diversity’. It is expected that you will move
toward a social justice rather than criminal justice framework as a strategy for alleviating the personal, cultural and structural problems. The proposal should also refer to the perennial problems of criminology in
relation to diversity. It really is not a traditional academic essay, but an opportunity for you to utilise your personal and academic experience to consider an alternative way of recognising and responding to
social problems. As such, you can include relevant tables, charts and diagrams.
The proposed layout is as follows.
Rationale (introduction)
• What are the problems that your proposal document will address? This could be a specific issue (such as the prevalence of sexual violence perpetrated against women, or the over-representation of young
Black men, or the incarceration of people with mental illness). Alternatively, you could focus on the structural inequalities experienced by a particular diverse group.
• Demonstrate (empirically) the historical and contemporary persistence of the problem that your proposal will address.
• This will inform your argument as to why we should respond/change.
Background
• This section will draw upon a range of (empirical/academic) sources related to your chosen area of diversity. From the outset, I would propose that you structure this section around the PCS model as
advocated by Thompson. Therefore you could highlight the above identified problem and consider it at the:
• (a) Structural – how structure contributes to the persistence of the problem
• (b) Cultural – how culture contributes and perpetuates the problems
• (c) Personal – how these problems are experienced at the personal level
• In order to respond to the above draw upon a range of sources/information to develop your argument. Utilise the information on Moodle, lecture slides, key readings, documents, evaluation reports, data
sources, the criminogenic needs charts, etc.
Available sources
• The problem/limitations of current equality legislation https://www.gov.uk/equality-act-2010-guidance .
• The Bromley papers
• Criminogenic needs assessment chart
• (Credible) Evaluation reports
• Tables and charts used in the lectures,
• The Office of National Statistics (ONS) will provide up to date social and demographic information on the current position of your chosen area of diversity.
• Information to highlight the present levels of inequality, disproportionality and differential treatment (this may be captured through an appraisal of current social/criminal policy).
Proposal
• Linked to the above – what are the policy/practice problems and implications for your group (what area do you want to change?)
• What are the prevalent (personal, social or criminogenic) needs to be addressed and tackled through your proposal that will improve the position of your diversity group?
• What steps should be taken to alleviate the identified problems for your chosen dimension of diversity?
• What theory base informs your proposal and will make a difference? {incorporating the work of Thompson’s PCS model would be a valuable feature here – but also throughout your proposal document}.
Evaluation
• Are there any implications with the proposal you have advocated? Will they have the intended outcome or are there certain challenges to your approach.
• Are there any tensions with seeking to improve the position of your chosen area of diversity without responding to other diversity groups?
