Concept Outline – A short synopsis describing your Final Portfolio.

1000-1500 words, plus reference images, storyboards and sketches.
Students should also read the Final Portfolio (Assessment Item 3) carefully to
understand what the Final Portfolio is and thus what their Concept Outline is for.
This document should provide a clear description of the portfolio concept, design &
proposed production methodology.
Marks will be awarded for creativity and good research in scoping inspirations for their
intended Final Portfolio.
Students are expected to research their initial visual ideas, how they might create the
proposed images, the genres of photography or other visual culture that the series may
fit into. It is useful to find outstanding practitioners & stylists in the areas you would like
to work in & investigate the techniques those photographers use for obtaining their
effects or particular ?look?.
Students are not expected to know technical details but are expected to investigate
the effects used by inspirational photographers and the techniques that may be
needed create the image.
You may use example images from your research on reference images from
photographers; you will find it helpful to produce a caption script if applicable,
storyboards and/or thumbnail sketches to illustrate your own ideas for the theme
and composition of images.
Document & reference your research. (include reference images in the body of the text)
Don?t assume that your own early ideas as a novice photographer are completely
original and without precedent: not finding those relationships or links is more likely to
mean you haven?t done the appropriate visual research.
The concept outline is a concise piece of professional writing. It is an imaginative &
visual exercise in creative media development that should demonstrate your ability
to scope the creative & professional tasks involved (what techniques in particular
you will need to master, potential locations) as well as convey your vision of your
project.
IMPORTANT: References in Written Work to photographers & critics. There are millions
of photographers out there. To ensure that students focus on culturally significant
photography content students should only refer to photographers in unit materials or on
the websites listed. Students may ask tutor for permission to use a particular
photographer or writer outside this restriction.
Elements you may wish to consider in your Concept Outline include:
? Your photographic concept ? a clear explanation of what it is you want to do in
your final portfolio.
? What moods and motivating elements are you trying to achieve PHO124 Photography Unit Guide S1, 2014

? What communicative ideas are you interested in.
? What styles of photography interest you.
? How you are going to achieve it:

o What resources you will need
o What photographic equipment will be required
o What skills will you need (that you perhaps don?t have at present?)
o What locations you will need
o Lighting requirements
o What props, costumes or makeup will be required.
o Talent (actors or models)
o Photo assistants, help with props
The purpose of the Concept Outline is to get you thinking seriously about your Final
Portfolio project early on in the semester. Particularly in terms of what is involved and
importantly how to talk about your work to others.
However, what you write in your Concept Outline is not set in stone and may not
necessarily be what you actually end up doing in your Final Portfolio.
If you should change your mind or become much more interested in another form of
photography then it is okay to change your concept for your Final Portfolio.
To do this you will need to inform your tutor via written request to change your concept
for your portfolio ? this is usually done via email. You do not need to write another
Concept Outline but you will need to explain your new concept in some depth.
Concept Outlines are to be handed in as a hardcopy along with a School of Arts
Assignment coversheet and placed in the drop box at the School of Arts Administration
Office.
Send an electronic copy to your tutor as backup, noting this in the email.
