Mini-Project: Coding Using NVivo

While hand-coding is one way to organize your data, you may also want to take advantage of software programs that facilitate the coding process. For this week’s

activity, you will take the interview data that you collected individually, and code it using NVivo, which is one such software program. You will then compare your

experiences with hand-coding and software coding, and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using a program like NVivo.

This is an individual assignment. Each researcher will code his or her own interview data.

Week 9: Coding Using NVivo


Last week, as part of the mini-project on interviewing and coding, you hand-coded data generated from the interviews you conducted in Week 7. This week, you will

recode that data using NVivo, an organizational software program frequently used by qualitative researchers. You will then write a short paper analyzing and comparing

the experiences of hand-coding data and coding the data using a software tool.

In addition to your coding activity this week, you will be asked to think about some data coding and analysis techniques that you would recommend for your qualitative

research plan.

Interview 1 – Part 1

The first interview in Part 1 was out of the ordinary as far as being close to a serious interview. There were many things that should be avoided in this interview to

save from embarrassment. The unprofessional observer was not properly organized to interview the participant in this video. The interview environment arrangement was

not hospitable, defiantly dangerous, and inadequately prepared. The observer did not make the state of affairs that were going to take place comprehensible concerning

the interview process. The interviewing techniques lacked valuable questions, which were far-off from open and ended standpoint. The observer was distracting by not

being able to keep the clipboard in one place, provide suitable eye contact, and failed to clearly clarify that recording interview was going to take place. The

observers’ procedures throughout the interview were obviously wonderful illustration on what not to do in an interview with a participant. The participant body

language as well as disbelief of the unprofessionalism demonstrated by observer distinguished that the participate felt uncomfortable and pushed to end the interview.

Interview 2 – Part 2

The second interview in Part 2 was excellent illustration of a professional interview. The observer stood to greet participate as well as guided as they walked in on

where to take a seat at. The interview area was without a doubt set up in a secure and well thought-out environment. The observer made encouraging outlook by being

descriptive to participate on the rationale on sole purpose of conducting the study, steps that would be taken from start to finish, number of others involved in

study, and options of being able to see transcribe of interview as well as a copy of the recording to build the feeling of ease to smooth out any trust issues. This

interview process presented that the observer chose good open and ended questions that will help reach the goals of correctly analysis to reach end result to

transcribe the conversation shared. By following the appropriate interview steps the participant was willing to stay over the thirty minutes time period that was

requested. The participant was enthusiastic to share personal stories to assist for the observation study. I enjoyed watching the body language, eye contact, and

repeating verbal interview techniques that were displayed throughout this video interview.

Thoughts on Own Interview Techniques

After watching both interviews, Part 2 was improved representation to gain knowledge to help improve observation skills. I would make sure my interview it will be well

thought-out, demonstrate appropriate body language and display encouraging facial expression. This technique approach will defiantly permit the participant to get

relaxed to be able to share their experiences related to my qualitative phenomenological research topic. I thought it was very imperative to keep in mind to choose

flourishing questions that will reflect my goals as observer in a qualitative phenomenological study approach. I would like to use the recording technique in my

interview process as a result to strong resource to refer back too. The feeling never wanting to have to second guess my notes that were taken is a position I do not

want to encounter. I feel the more practice with interviewing participant will allow a smooth out the ability to analysis and interpret for successful dissertation
