1. Drawing on your reading of the extract from Arlie Hochschild’s The Time Bind develop a semistructured interview schedule exploring the balance between work and home/caregiving responsibilities. Using your interview schedule, conduct, transcribe and code (using Dedoose or other suitable qualitative data analysis software) an audio-recorded interview of 20-30 minutes in
length with a friend, relative or associate who is currently in paid employment.
2. Write up your research as a 3000 word essay comprising:
Part A. Discussion of your research design drawing on methodological concepts covered in the
module (1500 words). This should include an explanation of your research philosophy and steps you
have taken to ensure credibility.
Part B. Analytical account of the interview (1500 words). This should include relevant background
information about the interviewee and interview setting plus a thematically organized summary of
the testimony featuring selected quotations from the interview. In this section please attempt to
connect the interview findings with Hochschild’s work on The Time Bind, identifying how your
interview supports, builds on or contradicts her research. You should also reflect on what you have
learned from the research process, commenting on whether your research went to plan and what
you might do differently if you were to repeat the process.
Reference list: Please note that you are expected to use the Harvard referencing format within
both the essay and reference list.
