Question 1. Think of this question as an opportunity to help your fellow students as they graduate! Design a newsletter that gives tips/suggestions for workers to consider in balancing work and family, as well

as types of benefits they might seek for a new employer. Think of this in the following way: You have (hopefully) learned about work and family issues that your fellow students who have not taken the class

might not have thought of or considered. What do you think they need to know as they seek their first professional employment?
Question 2. This question also asks for a newsletter but asks you to combine information and advocacy for transnational families. You read in Trask about many of the issues faced by workers from other

countries who are sending their wages home to family in developing countries. Approach this from the standpoint that your fellow Americans don’t know much about this issue, and if they do know anything

they think it is a personal issue whether or not to use immigrant labor.

Question 3. You have learned about work/family issues from the micro as well as macro level in the class. At the micro level you learned about your own family and their work history. At the macro level you

learned about issues involving global companies, banks, and work/family issues for people in different parts of the world. Given that our government has NOT solved these problems (so you don’t have to

solve them all in order to get points for this question), what changes would YOU make at the macro level and why do you think they would work. Think of yourself as head of a new cabinet post called “The

Buck Stops Here” (thank you Harry Truman), and you must make suggestions to President Obama about economic issues and government programs. Describe 3 changes that could be made to improve

America’s ability to support the citizens of the nation in a fiscally responsible manner.
Question 4. You are in charge of educating your fellow Americans about human trafficking. Most of them don’t understand the scope of the problem, but have recently become aware that this type of activity

exists, and they are watching what is happening with the school girls who were kidnapped in Africa this last week. Prepare a 1.5-2 page paper documenting the scope of the problem and what needs to be

done. You may use your text as well as other resources to document the issue. Presume that people reading it are concerned but not necessarily informed.

Question 5. Trask documents how feminism has spread women’s rights and gender equality principles across the globe, but also that Western feminism is also highly individualistic, which may not work well in

cultures that are more collectivist in orientation. How does she suggest we promote gender equality while also being aware of cultural differences? In other words, how can gender equality work with the global

economy, both protecting women as workers but also recognizing their needs as family members? (This is not an easy question, but she does have some suggestions in her book- what are they? Which do you

think might work?)

How is the globalization and commodification of caring labor changing social relationships inside and outside families? Do you see this change as ultimately helpful to families or problematic for families? Why do

you see it as helpful or harmful? You might want to think about how this may be played out in the future as this trend in globalization and commodification is essentially a product of the new millennium.
