Question 1
Bailey (2000) argues that “divergent communicative patterns in . . . everyday service encounters simultaneously represent 1) an on-going source of interethnic tensions, and 2) a local enactment of pre-existing social conflicts” (p. 87, author’s emphasis). This question asks you to explore these two representations.
• First, explain what Bailey means by saying that divergent communication patterns are both “1) an on-going source of interethnic tensions, and 2) a local enactment of pre-existing social conflicts””.
• Next, using the service encounter Bailey describes on pp. 97-99 as an example, explain how this interaction can be understood as both a source of interethnic tension and an enactment of pre-existing social conflict. Refer to specific lines of the conversation to support your claims, and be explicit about the divergent communicative patterns evident in the conversation and the specific characteristics of the interethnic tension and social conflicts at play.
Question 2
In lecture, we focused on big-D Discourses of masculinity in the two movies Ashcraft and Flores (2003) analyze. However, Ashcraft and Flores discuss big-D Discourses of femininity (womanhood) in these movies as well. This question asks you to reflect on these big-D Discourses of femininity.
• First, define what big-D Discourse is.
• Then, pick out at least three quotes from the article that highlight Discourses about women that Ashcraft & Flores discover in Fight Club and In the Company of Men, and explain the beliefs about women that these Discourses reveal (what they are like, their role in society, their relationship to men, etc.).
• Finally, share your thoughts about how Discourses of masculinity and femininity evident in Fight Club and In the Company of Men may shape actual interactions or relationships between/among men and women in contemporary society.
Question 3
This question asks you to apply the three perspectives we’ve taken so far to three readings from unit 3.
• First, explain what it means to take a single, double, and triple contingency perspective on communication.
• Next, pick out any three readings from unit 3. For each reading, describe a social problem addressed by the author(s), and explain how this social problem can be understood from single, double, and triple contingency perspectives
