For this assignment, watch the two short lecture clips on The Writing Situation, Part 1 and the The Writing Situation, Part 2. In Part 2, I talk you through a way to think about writing and producing texts:
through the RAIDS system (Invention, Arrangment, Style, Delivery, and Revision).??Once you’ve watch those lectures and read the essay by Manguel, “Reading Ourselves and the World Around Us” (located
in the Course Readings folder here on D2L), answer these questions, using the RAIDS approach to consider Manguel’s work. What is Manguel trying to revise in his audience? What is he inventing/how did he
invent the material in his essay–yes, you weren’t there, but you can imagine… What is his delivery–what is this piece? Describe it for me. What style is he using?
You don’t have to answer each sub-question here, but in about a paragraph or so for each, tell me about this essay using RAIDS terminology:
Revision, Arrangement, Invention, Delivery, Style (RAIDS)
1) Revision
What is/will the writer change (ideas, practices, etc. What?s being revised? (What changes are the author trying to inspire? What strategies are/will be engaged specifically to help the writer achieve the
revisions?)
2) Arrangement
How are things being put in relationship with one another? What?s being arranged (What?s being put in relation to what?
3) Invention
What did the writer have to do to create the text? That is, what activities did/does the writer have to engage in to create the text? What is being invented? (What ideas, practices, arguments, etc. are/will be
created by the text?)
4) Delivery
What delivery options are available? What media are available for/have been used in the communication situation? What delivery option is or should be engaged in this situation? What are the benefits and
obstacles of those media choices? How do delivery options affect the types of invention, arrangement, and style choices that have been/will be made?
5) Style
What styles of language have been used to/will meet the expectations of the reader? What style decisions are key in this situation? Might some unexpected style choices be integrated successfully into the
piece? Which ones? How can/does the writer help readers understand the purpose of these unexpected style choices?
