Reading: Readings: First Voices p. 185 – 288; Yakama Rising intro + chap 1 & 2
You can compare and contrast readings, or treat each one individually. Your reading notes can take any form you wish: an outline of salient points and questions, an essay, a list of pertinent issues. The idea is to write down and compile your responses to the material so that 1) your responses are clear in your own mind; 2) your responses are available for discussions in class; and 3) your responses are available for your final paper.
In your papers, you should address the particular arguments the author is making, not just identify the general topical area. The paper should be a critical analysis of the primary argument. Critical does not necessarily mean negative. Papers should be double-spaced and size 12 font. Name, course title, and date at the top left hand corner of the first page. They should be at least one page in length. Put the author’s name, title of essay/chapter, date at the top. The following is a suggested format, but not required. Again, if you already have a system you use for reading notes, please use that system.
Identify the main argument(s). (This can be a thesis statement, theory, concept, or idea). In other words, why is the author writing this essay?
What kind of evidence does the author use to support their main argument(s)? (Examples of evidence include historic documentation, interview transcripts, statistics, scholars and literature from different academic disciplines, and personal experience.)
Who is the author’s intended audience? (e.g. academic, community, etc.)
Do you agree or disagree with the author’s main arguments? Why or why not?
How might you be able to use the author’s ideas from this essay? In other words, do you see the author’s ideas making a difference in your life, community, or society in general? In other people’s lives and communities?
