Pick a monster (not the werewolf) from popular culture and write a research-based analysis of its significance. While you will include secondary research to strengthen what you want to say (both by disagreeing with other scholars or using other critical methods to arrive at your analysis), the focus for this essay is on your ideas.
Here are some sample questions to think about. Please do not try to answer all of these: What do you think your monster indicates about our culture? What cultural anxieties does it embody? Why do we need or want to believe this mythology in our culture?
Remember to dive below the waterline and discuss the not-so-obvious elements of the sign. You may use any of the scholarly material (Monster Theory and Coudrays essay, for example) as secondary sources.
Research Component
You must include four secondary research sources in your essay. The information on the monster you choose will be considered a primary source (e.g. television shows and films depicting or exploring the creature).
Your secondary sources will be articles you have found in the scholarly databases (e.g. JSTOR, and EBSCOHOST) or print materials in the library. You need to quote all of these sources at least once.
Be sure to include a Works Cited page at the end.
Your essay must be 1200 words and must adhere to MLA standards (1 margins on all sides with proper header/heading and page number format. It must also be double-spaced, in 12-point, Times New Roman font. If you have any questions about formatting, please consult the formatting handout on the website.
