Juvenile and Gun Violence in the Society
In the contemporary society, 20,000 children under the age of 20 years are killed or injured as a result of gun violence in the United States of America. The children find themselves in that position either because the perpetrator was their family member, their friend, a stranger or themselves. Juvenile in the society are linked to high suicide rates using guns with the success rates being high. The modern society is facing complex and dynamic social problems which require sustainable solution and among them is the issue of gun violence perpetrated by juveniles in the schools. This has brought up the debate on whether when juveniles are involved in such serious crimes, should they be prosecuted as adults in order to discourage the vice (Reich, Culross & Berrman, 2002).This essay paper explores violent crimes perpetrated by juveniles in the society and if that warrants stiffer penalties in terms of prosecuting them as adults as a form of sustainable solutions. Cases of juveniles committing serious crimes in the society are on the rise and it is relatively important for sustainable solutions to be adopted in the society. The crimes are motivated by several aspects which are considered to be the root cause of the vice in the society. Use of scholarly literature is applied to provide relevant information to support the aspects being explored.
Violent crime in the society has been on the rise with several measures being put in place to control them. Despite a significant decrease in violent crimes in the society since the 1990s, youth gun violence however has been on the rise hence creating concern in the society. It is important to understand that crime was attached to adult members of the society who needed incarceration as a correctional mechanism. However, delinquency among the youth was corrected through rehabilitation programs which saw them integrated back in the society and their activities monitored to ensure that they uphold the social values (Reich, Culross & Berrman, 2002).
The contemporary society has introduced complexities which create make social problems more dynamic. Youth gun violence in the society has been on the rise with several aspects being attached to the rising cases. This has made scholars attach exiting conditions in the society to being significantly involved in influencing violent nature of youths in the society. Children in the society are exposed to high violence which makes it be perceived as being normal. Economic inequality existing in the society has also significantly influenced violent crimes using guns by youths in the society. As the existing laws and legislations lack the capacity to control violent crimes among the youths which involve guns.
According to Reich, Culross and Berrman (2002) the problem of increased youth violence in the society is influenced by exposure to violence by the youths. The amount of violence that the modern society considers to be normal increases the chances of youths using guns.
Sheppard et al. (2000) in their article state that economic inequality that is present in the society contributes to the rising cases of youth crimes. This is because from an early age, children are exposed to the ideology that they can take what they dont have. The psychological trauma of not being able to have what they desire also influences how they perceive those trey think have.
With all the other aspects being cited as problems causing rise in gun related youth crime, the existing laws have been weighed upon as being the main course. Redding and Shalf (2001) state that it is important to understand that laws do not act as control measures, but they also play a part in prevention. The existing laws are not effective in handling violent crimes perpetrated by minors hence the rising cases.
Violent crimes by youths in the society are on the rise because of the exposure of violence the youths are exposed to, economic inequality in the society and lack of effective laws. The solution to the problem is when serious crimes committed by minors are given a similar magnitude of seriousness during prosecution to prevent the vice.
