Because of the changes in the economy, the workforce, and technology, the K-12 education system in the United States is undergoing many changes. It is often hard to spend the time understanding the issues and applying changes to work in schools. In the past 20 years, there have been changes to how teachers teach, what teachers teach, how teachers assess student learning, how technology impacts education, and many of the parameters around the act of attending school such as inclusion, safety, and the prevention of bullying. In this course we will look at some of these issues and begin to understand how society is reflected in K-12 schools.

Activity 1: Supporting an Issue (10 Points)
Reform efforts and legislative changes have significantly impacted the expectations of and functions within the K-12 system. In this activity, you will have a chance to consider five related issues and select which one you think will have the most significant potential impact on education.

Assignment Preparation
1. Read Issues 1-5 in the text.
2. Select the issue you wish to investigate further.
3. Locate three reference articles on the issue you selected.
Assignment Part 1: Support Your Issue (7 points)
Now is the time to take a stand. With the issue you selected, write a 3-5 page paper or develop a multi-media presentation to support one side of any of the five issues from the text. In your paper or presentation be sure to:
• Provide a thorough analysis of the issue as it related to the field of education.
• Analyze the political, emotional, and educational ramifications of the issue
• Support your issue with relevant citations gained from your review of the informational articles in the Pre-Activity and current literature of your choice.
• If you need more sources, visit the Northcentral Library.
• Include a reference list in APA format with a minimum of three publications.
• If you choose to write a paper, make sure to use APA. Refer to Northcentral’s APA FAQs and Guides for questions.
• If you choose to create a podcast, webinar, or narrated PowerPoint, be sure to include a separate page with your references and make sure to cite throughout your presentation.
