1. Discuss the role of the League of Nations in attempting to advance the rights of minorities. Briefly discuss the Minorities Protections Treaties and how, in the end, they failed. As well, detail some of the processes of forced assimilation, such as population exchanges and forced relocation (e.g., the Greek-Turkish population exchange, even the massacre of Armenians). See Chapter 2 in Dark Continent.
2. Discuss the rise of racial and biological nationalism in Europe in the 1920’s and 30’s, especially in Nazi Germany. How did this adversely affect minorities? Consider the legislation that was passed (such as the Nuremburg Laws) and the changes in citizenship and civil rights. Characterize Hitler’s “biological view of politics,” as manifested in his Mein Kampf and in notions such as Lebensraum, as well as the protection of the Volksgemeinschaft through racial hygiene and eugenics. See esp. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 in Dark Continent.
