Patricia Benner was born in Hampton, Virginia but grew up in California. She earned her associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree in nursing from Pasadena College. She received her master’s degree in

medical-surgical from the University of California, San Francisco in 1970 and received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkley in 1982. Benner is currently the director of the National Nursing

Education Study for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching. She is also a professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco and

holds the Thelma Shobe Endowed Chair in Ethics and Spirituality.
Benner’s work was focused on developing a scientific basis for nursing based on the lived experience of the nurse that encompassed the lived experience of the person that is afflicted by illness.
Patricia Benner developed a concept known as “From Novice to Expert.” This concept explains that nurses develop skills and an understanding of patient care over time from a combination of a strong

educational foundation and personal experiences. She proposed that a nurse could gain knowledge and skills without actually learning a theory. She describes this as a nurse “knowing how” without “knowing

that.” She further explains that the development of knowledge in fields such as nursing is made up of the extension of knowledge through research and understanding through clinical experience. The theory

identifies five levels of nursing experience: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert.
The work of Patricia Benner has influenced and made a great contribution in the field of nursing. Her concept about how different clinical settings could create many different clinical experiences, makes

new knowledge available to the practicing nurse and this information creates better nurses.
Novice nurse:
Novice nurses are often described as a beginner and inexperienced. They are either new to the profession or new to the area of practice. Novice nurses generally relies on their theoretical knowledge yet their

skills to apply this knowledge is still insufficient and needs improvement.
Advanced Beginner nurse:
The advanced beginner exhibits acceptable performance both in theory and skills as well. Begin constructing complex rules developed from actual practice to help guide actions.
Competent nurse:
A competent nurse generally has two or three years of clinical experience in a special or critical department. She/ He is knowledgeable and efficient in the application of nursing practice.
Proficient nurse:
The nurse exhibits a practical grasp and practical reasoning. He /She has a more holistic understanding of his/her practice that can accelerate decision-making skills.
Expert nurse:
Expert nurse’s relies decision makings in clinical situations based on their deeper background of experience. Theory is understood in a deeper manner and can take strong position being an advocate to the

patients and has the ability to redesign the system in caring ways.
