What is a pericope or pericopae? A pericope is a fancy word for a story or section from the gospels. For example, the story of the feeding of the 5000 would be an example of a pericope. The purpose of the paper is to find a parable, single occurrence, or miracle in the gospels that intrigues you. This pericope will be the focus of your paper. Also, each student must write exclusively on a particular pericope. Therefore, each student will have a separate section which everyone will need to submit to the professor first for verification.
In writing the paper students should:
-Choose a pericope from the gospels.
-Examples: The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:2-11); Fasting Questions (Matthew 9:14-17); Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-9); Birth of Christ (Luke 2:1-7); Genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:1-17); The Vine (John 15:1-11).
-Analyze the pericope using 4 commentaries or Journal Articles + 1 devotional source.
-Commentaries are books that ‘comment’ on the Scriptures. They are written to explain or provide a possible interpretation of a section of the Bible. A commentary is primarily concerned with explaining a Bible text but can also include the explanations of other authors. With commentaries, there are two basic types that we will be concerned with; Devotional and Academic/Technical. Devotional style commentaries are not meant to explain a text critically but to provide a possible interpretation that is understandable by all readers. Academic/Technical style commentaries are written to dig deep into the Bible and find the most probable meaning of the text at hand. Academic commentaries typically refer to many other commentaries or articles that inform the discussion of the particular text. While writing this paper, your primary sources should be Academic/Technical commentaries. You will be allowed to use one devotional commentary.
-Do Not use Google scholar, Wikipedia, the Bible, or an internet website as a source in your paper. If you do your paper will be returned to you ungraded, in which case you would have to find new sources.
– Critique the pericope yourself and interact with the commentaries.
-This does not mean copying statements from the commentaries and leaving it at that. Analyzing and critiquing your selected pericope means reading the commentaries and taking the understanding of the authors as informative to your own understanding of the biblical text. You are reading the commentaries to help you understand the text by providing other interpretations. In thinking through the pericope and putting your analysis down on paper, you should use the thoughts of the commentators you are reading. This is what is meant by interact with the commentaries.
