�A perfect literature review does not exist in a first draft. Submitting a first draft provides you with feedback from your instructor, and it supports your efforts to perfect your literature review .
�Many writers of literature reviews concentrate on the body of their literature review first and then write the introduction and the summary near the end of their writing. This can be useful, if you are absolutely clear about your purpose for writing this literature review and have your research question clearly written and in front of you, as you state and develop your themes.

Write your first draft of the literature review in a minimum of 10 double-spaced pages as a Word document. In your literature review, you should have done the following:
�Begun with an introduction that showed the significance of the topic as well as its historical context and/or how it fits in the broader scholarly literature in this field, while also clearly stating the research topic and the research question [in question form], your purpose for this literature review and the map of the major themes that will form the body of the paper.
�Integrated and evaluated the literature, dividing the body into the patterns you have found within the articles you reviewed. Note: You should have a minimum of 10 articles for your review, shown on the Reference page; at least 1/2 should be empirical studies, indicated by using **.
�Discussed which studies you considered stronger and your rationale
�Identified the gaps in the literature and the suggestions for future research, mentioned by researchers.
�Evaluated and synthesized the literature you chose.
�Given credit for direct quotes and ideas not original to you, using careful quotation and citation format, as needed.
�Avoided plagiarism, cautiously and judiciously.
�Ended with a summary that restated the purpose and map, while giving an overall evaluation of what you considered the most important elements of this review.
�Used spell check to review the first draft and proofread after using spell check.
�Had another reader review your paper, possibly out loud, with you carefully listening for the clarity and sense making.

Ensure that the paper covers the following:
1. In the introductory section, provide a brief context and then move into your specific research question, the purpose of the study, and the purpose of this particular assignment, the literature review. Conclude that section by listing the key themes you found in the 10 sources that you reviewed.
2. When you write a literature review, the discussion needs to be a synthesis of information. To do this, think about how you would answer the following questions:
a. What are some common big ideas (patterns/themes) found in the literature?

c. Where are areas of disagreement, and what are the arguments for and against?
3. Based on the above questions, create subheadings that reflect these common themes. Keep in mind, one source cannot be considered a theme,; a theme must be a pattern of thought seen across a few sources.
4. When you discuss information within each theme, draw on all the sources when you need them to support a particular point you have made. If more than one source made that point, that is a good sign that you have identified a key point! � just reference ALL the sources at the end of the sentence.
5. Once you have outlined the important issues and arguments made, you should point out possible gaps in each theme – i.e., what has not been investigated yet about each theme that we need to know? Connect the gaps to your proposed topic to demonstrate the importance of your study.
6. Theoretical framework: Discuss a framework explicitly as it provides a good context on what and why specific literature was reviewed and provides transition to the body of the paper.
7. Body of the Paper: Information within each theme needs to be synthesized and presented collectively and not discussed one study after the next. Only key themes from the articles need to be discussed. Gaps again must be discussed as a whole for the theme, and not gaps in each article. For instance, if challenges for women leaders is a theme, what similarities and differences do you see in how the studies have discussed this topic, and what gaps are you seeing in those studies collectively.
8. Conclusion: Sum up the overall trends, highlight gaps in overall literature, and discuss how your proposed study will help fill these gaps.
9. Provide good transition sentences that connect one section with the next.
10. Revise and remove unnecessary details and make sure your writing is written from the perspective of a review of the literature.
