Step 1
Express your goals in terms of specific events or behaviors. In other words, decide specifically what you want to accomplish.
Use the analogy of a journey. By deciding your starting point and the destination, you can establish the routes you will travel that will lead you to your destination. When setting a personal or professional goal, if you know your starting point and your final goal, you can identify what you must do to reach the goal. For example, if you want to become a manager, what type of management do you seek? Managing people? Managing process? Managing finances? Managing information systems? Your specific management goal will help you identify the type of education, training, and experience you need to acquire.
Step 2
Express your goal in terms that can be measured.
How will you know when you have reached your goal? How do you identify when you have passed certain points toward reaching your goal? If you�re enrolled in a management training program, or if you�re taking continuing education courses in management, each time you complete an additional segment, you can identify your progress toward your goal of becoming a manager. At the completion of your training, you may receive a certificate or a degree, or you may be promoted to a manager�s position, all of which are measurable points in a plan.
Step 3
Assign a timetable to your goal. If you�re a procrastinator, this step is especially important.
Setting a goal is one thing; achieving it is entirely different. By establishing a schedule or calendar for achieving your goal, you are more likely to reach it. �Someday I will take a management course, or someday I will check into the company�s management training program,� almost guarantees that you will delay your goal.
You need to specify target dates for completion and follow through. �I will take an evening course in management this semester at a community college.� Or �I will listen to a professional development audiotape to and from work each day.�
Step 4
Choose a change you can control. Think carefully about whether other people or events will interfere with your ability to successfully make the change.
Striving for a goal over which you have no control will result in disillusionment and futility. Attempting to lose 50 pounds in 3 months is probably futile�and certainly unhealthy�but losing the same 50 pounds over 18 months may be realistic. Earning $100,000 by the time you�re 23 is also likely to be futile, but earning $30,000-$40,000 by the time you are 23 is realistic.

The 4-square diagram below will be helpful in making decisions about where you want to spend your change efforts. If you are like most people, you will feel best when you are engaged in the type of activities listed in Box1�the ones you know in advance and can control.
With Box 1 activities, you�ll feel in charge of the changes. You�ll probably feel the worst when faced with the type of activities listed in Box 4�the ones you do not know in advance and cannot control. Therefore, you should strive to eliminate or reduce the impact of the events listed in Box 4. In the example, suggestions are given for containing the problems that might arise from Boxes 2 and 4.

Remember the journey analogy? To reach your destination cities, you�ll have to map out all the routes you will take along the way, including Interstate highways, back roads, and streets. To reach you goal, you�ll have to establish a series of targets and work to reach them.

Make yourself accountable for your progress.
Stop often and take stock of your progress if you won�t know whether you are on schedule and on target for completion of your goal.
Telling a coworker or a friend about your goal adds pressure to reach the desired result. Most of us don�t like to admit failure to others.
