-Write some words that would describe the themes you most often hear/read in the popular media concerning Iran.
-Watch the movie "Children of Heaven (1999 Majidi.)" (This movie is available on Netflix, at some video stores, and on reserve in the CSC-MPLS library—some students have also found it in two parts on Youtube.) This is an Iranian -made movie from 1999; it is not a documentary, but through the arts we may come to some new understandings about a country.
- Consider how the arts (film, dance, theater, music, etc.) can breakdown stereotypes.
- Write words that describe the film. How are the words similar to or contrasting with the words often used by the public media concerning Iran? What perspective of Iran would one miss by learning about Iran only by popular media? Do we, as participants in a democracy, have a responsibility to look beyond the headlines to learn about domestic and international issues?
-Submit three paragraphs on your initial reflections on words used in the media on Iran, the film, and how film (the arts) can affect stereotypes.
