Coursework Two: Supporting Documentation Guidelines

• You are acting as the HR team at Solaris IT and Management Solutions (the case study organization). For your coursework you must submit ONE document per group outlining the training and development

activities you have devised for three new appointments at the company. You will then deliver the key points in your group presentation.

• In the cast study organization, three appointments are being made:

o new IT/MBA graduate appointed as team manager for R&D project team (first line role);
o current employee promoted to team manager on a software project team (first line role);
o marketing manager in UK HQ appointed as operations manager for subsidiary office in Barcelona (middle management role).

• For EACH of the three appointments you must include at least ONE training programme/activity.

• The information in your supporting documentation can be written as a table or report format.

• For each training programme/activity you should include the following information in your supporting documentation:

o i. Title of Activity: What title have you given this training
course/programme?
o ii. Brief description: What is the nature of this activity? For example,
is it an induction? A specific training course? An action learning project? If a training course, is it online or face-to-face, accredited or non-accredited, in-house or external?
o iii. Primary objective: What skills/knowledge are you aiming to
develop through this activity? For example, is it
to improve customer service skills? Is it to improve cross-cultural awareness? Is it to develop team leadership skills? Be as specific as possible!
o iv.Location/duration: Where will the activity take place? Will it take
place on company premises or at an external
training provider/college? How long will the course/programme of study last? Is there a specified time scale (i.e. one day per week for six weeks) or is it ongoing?
o v. Content: Given the overall objective of the activity (as
specified above), what specific content is included in the activity? For example, if the activity is an induction, then what is included in the overall induction programme? This could be a mixture of activities and

methods held over a number of sessions and at different periods of time – be as specific as possible!
o vi. Methods: How should the programme/course be
delivered i.e. what is the process? For example, is it through tutorials/workshops? Will you use role plays, critical incidents, tests, written work? Will it be through formally held sessions or through informal

discussion? Group or individual? Who will be involved?
o vii. Evaluation: How and when will you get feedback on the
success/outcome of the activity and from whom will you seek feedback? For example, evalution forms at the end of the programme/session/activity? Discussion with those taking part? Views of peers,

colleagues, managers?
o Viii. Rationale: This is a very important section! If the previous
points present your description of the activity, then our rationale is when you put forward your analysis. You must explain your reasons for your choices outlined above, backed up with evidence from further

reading and research.

The table on the following page represents some basic ideas arising from our discussions during our coursework two review session. Please note that this table is included as a GUIDE only. It is not meant to

be either exhaustive or specific. For your coursework you should include significantly more detail on each of your chosen activities/programmes including a well argued and well-referenced rationale. Also you

would use a separate table for each course/activity chosen. So, for example if you decided to include an induction programme then this would be outlined in a separate table of its own. Use lecture slides and

your notes taken during sessions as a starting point and then back this up with relevant reading and research.

Within your groups you should allocate the work out on an equitable basis and be in regular contact to exchange ideas and check progress.

On Wednesday April 30th it is important you attend our scheduled sessions as this will provide you with the opportunity to discuss and check progress both within your group and with the tutor.
