Guidelines
Step 1: Read your source. Now that you have identified your final project topic and selected your sources, be sure to read them through fully before beginning your

annotations.
Step 2: Format your source in your choice of APA or Turabian style at the top of each annotation. Refer to the tools and resources from the Shapiro Library in

formatting your annotations. These tools will walk you through this process.
Step 3: Create your annotation. Creating these annotations will be critical in helping you understand the sources’ relevance and significance prior to writing your

paper. These annotations will be 2 to 3 paragraphs that sufficiently explain all four of your sources and their significance to your final paper. Refer to the grading

rubric below on how you will be assessed in this activity. You will have two annotations for your primary sources and two for your secondary sources.

Primary Sources
A primary source is a firsthand account or description of an historical event. This kind of historical resource is “unfiltered” since it has not been interpreted first

by a historian. You are acting as a historian to explain this resource.
• Authority: Identify the author, his or her place in society, and the original publication purpose (for example, is it a letter, a diary, a newspaper article?). For

what reason or purpose was it written? Who was it written for (i.e., the audience)?
• Credibility: Is the source credible? Think about its purpose as you consider the strengths, weaknesses, or biases you find when you read it.
• Relevance: How is it relevant to your final project topic? What is the connection?

Secondary Sources
Secondary sources, or second-hand accounts, are often created from the study of numerous primary sources to provide a summative interpretation or explanation of the

event, person or issue. Secondary sources, often written years or even decades after the event, can offer an historical perspective that primary documents are unable

to provide.
• Authority: Identify the author, the original publication purpose (for example, is it a newspaper article, a magazine, or some type of scholarly essay in a

professional journal?), and the audience. What is the main idea or thesis behind this source?
• Credibility: Is the source credible? Think about its purpose as you consider the strengths, weaknesses, or biases you find when you read it.
• Relevance: How is it relevant to your final project topic? What is the connection?
